0311 -  Rifleman

             Pvt - Sgt

The 0311 Rifleman is the eminent enlisted MOS in the Marine Corps.  As an organization centered around the infantry, this MOS is the main effort, which other MOS's exist to support.  Rifleman compose the rifle platoons which locate, close with and destroy the enemy through fire and close combat.

The Riflemen employs the M16M4/A4 Service Rifle, the M203 Grenade Launcher and the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR). Riflemen are the primary scouts, assault, and close combat forces available to the MAGTF.  They are the foundation of the Marine Infantry Organization, and as such are the nucleus of the fire team in the rifle squad, the scout team in the LAR Squad, and Scout Snipers in the infantry battalion. Noncommissioned Officers are assigned as Fire Team Leaders, Scout Team Leaders, and Rifle Squad Leaders.

The 0311 MOS is the largest in the Marine Corps with approximately 15,000 Marines designated as Riflemen.

To become a Rifleman, recruits must pass MOS specific initial strength standards while at recruit training.  Following recruit training, Marines will attend the School Of Infantry (SOI) at either Camp Lejeune, North Carolina or Camp Pendleton, California.  While all Marines are considered riflemen and attend SOI, the 0311 Marines will be in the Infantry Training Battalion attending Infantry Rifleman Course.  Non-infantry Marines attend Marine Combat Training (MCT) while at SOI.

Marines in this MOS will arrive at their units and be organized into fire teams, rifle squads, and infantry platoons.

Marines selected to be 0311 Rifleman have many training opportunities.  There are numerous training courses they can attend to further their skills and lethality including Cold Weather training, Mountain Warfare training, Jungle Warfare training, Foreign Weapons Instructor, Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques (HRST), and more.

Riflemen will go anywhere the infantry goes (which is everywhere the Marine Corps goes).  During wartime, they will be on the front lines destroying America's enemies.  During peacetime, they can be found in the infantry battalions in each Marine Division, in Battalion Landing teams on Marine Expeditionary Units, guarding nuclear weapons and Navy ships at submarine bases, in Embassies, Marine rotational forces in Europe and Australia, and Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Forces (SP-MAGTF's) around the globe.
