             Pvt- Sgt

The 0341 Mortarman is the primary MOS for enlisted infantry Marines who operate man portable small and medium mortars as part of the Infantry Battalions' weapons platoons and companies.

Mortarmen are responsible for the tactical employment of the M224 60mm Light Mortar and M252 81mm Medium Mortar. Mortarmen provide indirect fire in support of the rifle and LAR squads/platoons/companies and the infantry and LAR battalions.

Mortarmen spend time in a section within a company's Weapons Platoon, or in the mortar platoon of an infantry battalion's Weapons Company.

The Mortarman is physically dominant, and is proficient in mortar gunnery, tactical combat casualty care, crew drills, and patrolling through repetitive yet variable realistic training in an immersive, high-stress environment. They are located in the weapons platoon of the Rifle Companies, 81mm Mortar Platoons of the Weapons Companies and LAR Companies. Noncommissioned Officers possessing the decision making ability to discriminately apply lethal force are assigned as Mortar Gunners, Forward Observers, Fire Direction Plotters, and squad and section leaders.

As Mortarmen, Marines will carry the mortar tubes, baseplates, bipods, and ammunition (high explosives, illumination, white phosphorous, etc) in addition to a standard rifleman's load in order to rapidly deploy the infantry's organic indirect fire assets.  Using their expertise, knowledge of weather conditions, aiming stakes or mortar sights, Marines can rapidly assemble, aim, and employ mortars to drop explosives directly on top of the enemy.  The mortarman is an integral part of the Marine rifle platoon - they work directly with the 0311 Rifleman and 0331 Machine Gunner to place the enemy in a combined-arms dilemma ultimately resulting in their destruction.

Marines will enter this MOS as an entry level MOS and be designated by the MOS 0300.  After they graduate Basic Infantry Marine Course, Infantry Training Battalion, School Of Infantry, Camp Pendleton, California or Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, they will move onto mortar specific training. Mortarmen earn their MOS after they complete the Mortar Marine Course at School Of Infantry, Camp Pendleton, California or Camp Lejeune, NC.

0341's will become proficient with the the placement, sighting, and operation of mortar systems.  Many mortaren will also become proficient with the 120mm Mortar System.
