0317 -  Scout Sniper

The 0317 Scout Sniper is a secondary MOS for infantry Marines who have received and graduated from formal training as designated marksmen.  Marines in this MOS perform scouting, reconnaissance, overwatch, sniping, and other specialized mission sets.

Scout Sniper Marines must use their training to deliver long range, precision fire during combat, and be able to target enemy leaders and other key personnel important to deny the enemy freedom of movement on the battlefield.

 

Scout Sniper Marines will also be relied on to stealthily gather information in reconnaissance and surveillance operations for intelligence purposes important to the success of the Marine Corps mission.

0317's are found in Scout Sniper Platoons at Infantry and Reconnaissance Battalions in each Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) and the reserves. 

The Scout Sniper is a Marine skilled in field craft, advanced communications and marksmanship who delivers long range, precision fire on selected targets from concealed positions in support of combat operations and in control of supporting arms. They have a secondary mission of gathering information for intelligence purposes.

Marines seeking to attain the 0317 MOS must have the following : a minimum GT Score of 100, currently expert rifle qualification, all the essential qualifications and capabilities of an infantry Marine, vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes (color blindness is discouraged), a current First Class PFT, no history of mental illness, and secret security clearance.

Marines meeting these prerequisites may attend the 12 week Basic Scout Sniper Course at the School of Infantry-East (SOI-E), Camp Lejeune, North Carolina or SOI-West, Camp Pendleton, California.  The purpose of this course is to train a Marine in the knowledge and skills required of a Scout Sniper serving in an Infantry Battalion or Reconnaissance unit. During this course, instruction focuses on the fundamentals of Scout Sniper field skills, marksmanship, and mission planning. Marines qualify on the M40 series sniper rifle, M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS), and M107 Special Application Scoped Rifle (SASR). Marines learn Land Navigation, Known Distance Marksmanship, Surveillance, Unknown Distance Marksmanship, Limited Visibility Target Engagement, Call for Fire procedures, High Frequency Communications, Mission Planning, and Reconnaissance and Surveillance Patrolling.  The course culminates with a comprehensive field exercise that evaluates the Marine's ability to perform all duties required of a Scout Sniper serving in an Infantry Battalion or a Reconnaissance unit.  

Upon successfully graduating from this school, Marines are awarded the MOS of Scout Sniper, and the nickname PIG - a professionally instructed gunman.  Marines in the fleet who are provided marksman rifles without formal training at Scout Snipers Course are nicknamed HOGs - hunters of gunmen.

 

Marines in this MOS will carry special weapons such as the M40 sniper rifle, M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS), and M107 Special Application Scoped Rifle (SASR), also known as the Barrett .50 Caliber Rifle.  This Secondary MOS is available to Marines with a primary MOS of 0311, 0321, 0331, 0341, 0351, 0352, 0369.

Senior Marines in the MOS may attend Scout Sniper Unit Leaders Course, Team Leaders Course, Mountain Snipers Course, and others.  Marines who have received advanced training, particularly the unit leaders course, are referred to as Razorbacks.
